Taking a Road Trip With Kids
The Curse
Being a single parent means you become cursed by Einstein’s Theory of Relativity. There is so much to do that time continues to move at an increasingly accelerated rate. As in, I can’t believe it’s October! It was just summer a minute ago. Now we’re heading into the holiday season, the busiest time of the year for most of us. Typically this is the time when visiting family and friends starts to pick up. For many of us that means road trips with kids. And here is where Einstein’s Curse comes into play in the opposite way. A minute can drag on forever. If your kids are like mine, 2o minutes in a car is an eternity and about all they can handle without some form of intervention. If you haven’t prepared, the intervention is usually in the form of you threatening bodily harm if they don’t stop bugging each other for entertainment.
Play Driving Games
When we’re on a long trip and things start to get boring we play driving games. Christina Laun over at Travel Hacker offers some free game suggestions to keep everyone entertained on a long drive. Here’s number six on her list of 27.
20 Questions: An old favorite, 20 questions is a great game for inquisitive little ones. The game begins with one person choosing pretty much anything they can think of. The first question for the guessers is usually “animal, vegetable, or mineral?” though it doesn’t have to be. Players then go through a litany of questions trying to determine the nature of the mystery object and answers must be yes or no. The winner is whomever guesses the object first or can stump the other players with their object.
Play My Favorite Driving Game
A personal favorite in our car is the Alphabet Search game. Starting with the first letter of the alphabet, take turns trying to find something out the window that starts each letter. This game can eat up a good chunk of time. Plus these types of games promote togetherness and interaction, and that’s alway good.
